The students will learn to explain the elements of plot and character as presented through dialogue in scripts that are read, viewed, written or performed. They will also learn to identify if the narrator or speaker of a story is first or third person.

This week we will be learning about poetry terms and the different kinds of poems. The students will be practicing writing their own poem. We will also be learning about using commas in a series.

The students will be creating their goals for this year (2016). We will continue to practice for the reading benchmark.

Week #17 Procedures/ Capitalization/Benchmark Practice
The students will write, follow and explain a set of written multi-step directions. They will be expected to locate and use specific information in graphic features of text when practicing for the benchmark. The students will practice the capitalization of Historical Places, Geographical Places and Names.
Los estudiantes van a escribir, seguir y explicar un set de direcciones de múltiples pasos. Se espera que ellos localicen y usen información específica de características gráficas cuando estén practicando para los exámenes del distrito. Los estudiantes practicarán el escribir nombres de lugares históricos, geográficos y propios con mayúscula.
Week #16 Writing to Respond/Bio
The students will answering specific questions about themselves. They will be writing to respond in their journal.

Week #15 Media Literacy/Possessive Pronouns
The students will understand how communication changes when moving from one genre of media to another. They will be able to explain how various design techniques used in media influence the message (e.g., shape, color, sound) and compare various written conventions used for digital media (e.g., language in an informal e-mail vs. language in a web-based news article).
Los estudiantes van a comprender cómo la comunicación cambia cuando cambias de medio literario. También van a poder explicar cómo se usan diferentes técnicas para influenciar el mensaje y podrán comparar varias comvenciones que se usan para los medios digitales.

This week we will work on spelling patterns to correctly spell unknown words. The students will use text-features to locate information, make and verify predictions. The students will practice writing apostrophes for contractions.

This week we will begin working with non-fiction text. The students will learn to identify text-features and how we can use those to understand the text.

This week we will focus on making predictions before reading a story. We are also learning about apostrophes and how to use them when writing.

This week we will be focusing on the prefixes -ly and -y. We are also be learning about prepositional phrases and we will continue working in creating a summary of a story.

This week we will be working on creating a summary using the sequence of events. We will also practice spelling using the common syllabication patterns.

Week #8 Endings/Sequence of Events/ Subject and Predicate
This week the students will learn to drop the final "e" and add endings such as -ing, -ed, or -able. They will read "Two Old Potatoes and Me" to learn about sequence of events and summarizing main events. The students will learn to use complete subject and complete predicate in a sentence.
Esta semana los estudiantes aprenderán a reemplazar la última "e" con finales como "-ing, -ed, o -able". Leeran "Two Old POtatoes and Me" para aprender sobre la secuencia de eventos y para resumir los eventos más importantes. Los estudiantes usarán sujeto y predicado para escribir oraciones.
Week #7 Character Analysis/Point of View/Verbs/Syllabication Patterns
This week we will learn about the short /a/ and /o/. We will read Ba Business to analyse characters and describe the interactions the characters have and how they undergo changes throughout the story. We will identify whether the narrator or speaker of a story is first or third person. Finally, we will continue working with verbs (past, present and future).
Esta semana aprenderemos sobre las vocales cortas /a/ y /o/. Leeremos la historia Ba Business para analizar los personajes y describir las interacciones que tienen asi como tambien los cambios que pasan en toda la historia. Identificaremos si el narrador u orador está hablando en primera o tercera persona. Finalmente, continuaremos trabajando con los verbos en el presente, pasado y futuro.
Week #6 Writing to respond
The students will write to respond to expository or literary texts that demonstrates understanding of the texts.
Los estudiantes escribirán para responder a textos literarios o expositivos para demostrar comprensión del texto.
Week #5 Context clues and verbs
The students will use context to determine the relevant meaning of unfamiliar words or distinguish among multiple meaning words and homographs. They will use and understand the functions of verbs in past, present and future.
Los estudiantes usarán contexto para determinar el significado de palabras desconocidas o distinguir entre palabras de varios significados y homógrafos. Los estudiantes usarán y entenderán las funciones de los verbos en presente, pasado y futuro.
Week #4 Context clues, double ending consonants and writer's response
Focus for this week is double final consonants when adding an ending (hop to hopping), context clues to distinguish among multiple meaning words and homographs.
El enfoque de esta semana son las palabras que terminan en doble consonante y como se cambia el final (hop a hopping), usar claves de contexto para identificar el significado de palabras con significados múltiples y los homógrafos.
Week #3 Making connections between texts
This week is all about making connections between literary and informational texts. We will continue working with plurals. The students will write about important personal experiences during writing.
